Use of Gopher
Gopher came into existence in the year 199. The application helped to view the text files in a hierarchically organized manner, which is considered to be the forerunner of search engines.
Rise of Veronica
Veronica is very similar to the earlier one gopher, used to display the collection of menus from most of the Gopher sites. Veronica is used to build an on the spot menu which comprises of the matched items with your search.
Other Developments
On the other hand Jughead was totally different from the Gopher, searched a single server at a time. The process was a very slow one when it is compared with Veronica.

During 1993, yet there was no search engines was established, Oscate Nierstrasz at the University of Geneva developed Perl scripts, which would mirror and rewrite these pages into a standard format, which was the basis for W3 Catalog, the first search engine.
